Artists staying in Story Villa Heinävaara:

Places are made special by their stories and the people who live in them. Story Villa is exactly about that. And when art and the extraordinary surrounding nature are added, it becomes the perfect recipe for happiness.
Thanks to Artist at Risk, I arrived at the residency in November, when nature was preparing for its winter sleep. It felt as if childhood fairy tales were coming to life before my eyes: an old forest covered with a thick blanket of moss, silky lake surfaces, the musical rustle of grass, and the northern lights. Walks among the trees have a magical ability to dissolve anxiety and heal exhaustion. In this silence, I learned to feel safe and to clearly hear my own thoughts — they suddenly became light and cloudless.
Drawing became a continuation of this environment: I did not search for a theme, it found me on its own. And it was here that it gained a special sense of wholeness and calm. Trees began to grow on paper, and new animal characters with kind eyes appeared.
Story Villa is a place where even the simplest daily life turns into art. Every corner of the kitchen or living room tells its own story — warm, alive, and sincere.
I was lucky to celebrate Christmas here — one of the most important holidays for me. And although I was far from home, I felt deep warmth and care among kind people.
There is much more I could say, but perhaps the most important thing is this: the memories of the time spent at Story Villa will always warm my heart. My sincere thanks to Sirpa and Timo for their hospitality and for the wonderful atmosphere of a place that became my temporary home.
The soft, cozy glow of the lantern on the porch has settled in my soul.

My residency lasted from September to December, and it was unforgettable! September was a green summer, October was golden, and November blessed us with abundant snow.
I enjoyed hikes in the forest and by the lakes, made friends with the local goats and sheeps, and fell in love with visiting village clubs and listening to local folk music.
In the Story Villa library, I read the Finnish epic poem ”Kalevala” for the first time, which left a profound impression on me and inspired new creative reflections. The residence became a place of strength and fruitful work for me. I created the graphic project ”Pink Line,” which has already taken on a life of its own.
The atmosphere of the residence is a credit to its hosts, Sirpa and Timo! Sirpa is a true magician! She has a talent for connecting with everyone, and she does so with sensitivity and professionalism. I’m glad I met Sirpa on my journey, and I hope our connection will continue.
I’m grateful to Artists at Risk and Story Villa for the opportunity to work and live in the lap of nature; it has given me strength, confidence, and a renewed creative impulse.

The residence provides creative opportunities for authors of a wide range of genres.
There’s a literary collection, authentic weaving looms, a vintage piano, and a workspace where you can bring your most daring projects to life.
There’s also a magnificent kitchen where I prepare dishes using local fish and produce. A cozy living room with a fireplace, designer rooms for artists adorned with Finnish rugs, a sauna, and a spacious garden where you can retreat, read a book, sip tea at a round table, or pick mushrooms. It’s a paradise where life feels more measured and even surreal.

Elokuussa 2025 vietimme hersyvän helteisen viikon Story Villassa äänittäen esikoisalbumia, jonka työnimi on ”Sulatoin”.

“You don’t have to do it perfectly, good is already enough,” — Sirpa told me when I was worried about whether I was sorting the trash correctly.
But, of course, this reflection isn’t about waste sorting at all. I learned how to do that quite quickly.
And along with it, I also learned to forgive myself: for mistakes, for weakness, for imperfection, and all the other made-up standards in my head.
This residency was a true breath of coziness and healing. I opened the world to myself, and myself to the world. In my own way.
A month before I received the invitation to come to Finland, I had just ended a relationship, moved into a new apartment, and felt completely broken.
I looked at myself in the mirror and said:
“Universe, give me something that will help me return to myself, something to help me heal and live through this period with love for myself, something that will bring me inspiration and inner support.”
It seems the universe heard me and even added a little extra. Because I received much more than I had asked for.
Today, on our way to the train station, Sirpa asked me what did I get from this residency.
I said: “A new Vika and a yellow overcoat.”
But the truth is, there are so many things I’m grateful for:
– lunch with live organ music,
– a huge full moon, orange like an apricot, peeking through the window,
– delicious Finnish cuisine,
– coffee in yellow and blue cups on the way back from Kuopio,
– strawberries (I only thought about them, and Sirpa had already made it happen),
– conversations about everything under the sun,
– spontaneous trips to Joensuu,
– ice cream by the riverside,
– mushrooms and blueberries picking,
– questions about me and my family,
– curiosity about Ukraine and the support I felt,
– new poems and countless grant applications submitted,
– snow in May and wild strawberries in July,
– kanterelles growing in the garden,
– unexpected travel adventures,
– for everything, everything, everything.
A piece of my heart will forever stay in Finland.
I dream of writing a book about it.

I visited Story Villa during a hot week in July 2025. My goal for the residency week was to design and ideate new musical concepts. The residency was wonderfully inspiring; the workspaces, located in the premises of an old elementary school, were full of layers from different eras, and I constantly discovered many new ideas. As a resident of the capital region, the peace of the countryside also offered a remarkable change from the city noise – there was room to expand my thinking.
The residency inspired me to create a concept for a new music project; the house told stories that gave rise to a character and music. I also developed my artistic practice, which combines sound art, ecology, and futures research. The green and blooming Heinävaara offered a wonderful setting for exploring the resonance between humans and their surrounding world.
During the residency, I also met the poet Viktoriia Olishchuk. Together we filmed a short video where she recites a poem she wrote, and I accompany her improvising on the piano.
Warm thanks to Sirpa and the residency hosts! It was wonderful to meet you, and I felt at ease in your care. The week was far too short, and I look forward to visiting again soon!

Story Villa is a truly magical residency. I arrived there after spending two weeks in Svalbard, and the transition to its peaceful, inspiring environment felt like a gift. Nestled in an old schoolhouse surrounded by forests and wildflowers, the residency provided the perfect setting to focus deeply on my art-poem collages. The studio space is bright and full of natural light, which made it a joy to work in each day. Sirpa, the residency host, was incredibly attentive and kind—she went above and beyond to support my work, including helping me organize an art exhibition at the end of my stay. Her care and vision are part of what make this place so special. I wholeheartedly recommend Story Villa to any artist seeking dedicated time and space to create in a nurturing and beautiful environment.

I was warmly welcomed at Story Villa during my residency in November 2024. The residency provided excellent working conditions with a private indoor studio, a spacious living room, a cozy bed room and nearby forests with peaceful surroundings. If you want to experience the Finnish countryside, this is the place to go.
In this inspiring environment I further developed my movement and dance practice inspired by perceiving the body as a landscape. By exploring sensory, kinesthetic, and imaginative ways of knowing through movement, I conducted research both indoors in the studio and outdoors in the Finnish forests. Dancing amidst the trees, observing birds, and experiencing the raw forces of fog, snowstorms, and freezing temperatures profoundly shaped my practice. These experiences led to the creation of new artistic and pedagogical concepts, movement tasks, and mixed-media artworks. For the first time, I even composed my own piano music to accompany my dance.
I am deeply grateful to have met Sirpa and her family. Her unwavering support created an atmosphere of trust and appreciation, enabling both focused solitude and meaningful exchanges about art, Finnish culture, nature, and stories. Her introductions to local artists and institutions, along with her encouragement of open dialogue, paved the way for new collaborations and opportunities to present my research.
Thanks to her knowledge about the local dance festival, I presented my research on the open stage of the Lonely in the Rain Dance Festival in Joensuu, held at Art Center Ahjo. I also attended workshops and exhibitions organized by the Regional Dance Center of Eastern Finland. Furthermore, I co-created the performance Memento Mori with visual artist Maya Kolensnik, who was also staying at the residency. Sirpa gladly assisted with the organization and invitations for the performance, which took place in the Story Villa studio. Together with Maya, we blended installation and movement, and the work resonated deeply with the local community, fostering meaningful dialogue.
I felt highly valued as both an artist and a human being, and I am deeply thankful for the warm invitation to return to Story Villa—an opportunity I hope to embrace in the future.
Story Villa has offered the time, space, and community needed to deepen my work and share it with new audiences. For this, I extend my heartfelt gratitude.
My residency was supported by Culture Moves Europe.

In the modern world, the opportunity to reconnect with nature has become an extraordinary luxury, reserved for those rare individuals who can pause the high-speed flow of life and reflect on their values.
Now, as waves of destruction shake our homeland day by day, it was hard even to imagine that somewhere there exists a place where one can feel safe.
The breathtaking landscapes of Finland, with their unique charm, have the power to positively affect even the most restless mind, offering inspiration, uplifting energy, and fill you with that extraordinary northern Zen — pure balance. Forests, lakes, the ever-changing sky, beautiful trees, the northern lights, authentic architecture…
For artists, being in a space that radiates energy is a game-changer. No distractions — just smooth-flowing thoughts and the freedom to bring ideas to life. It’s a vibe that simply can’t be replicated amid the city’s endless, unrelenting noise.
My gratitude to the creators of this residency is boundless. Surrounded by their care, invigorating activities that could ever be imagined in an unparalleled natural beauty of North Karelia, it is effortless to feel happy.
Big love to Sirpa and Timo — thank you for everything!

Staying at the Story Villa Heinävaara artist residence, which Artists at Risk (AR) provided me, was a real gift for me.
Kind and caring hosts, a large comfortable house with workshops – all this inspires and gives the physical opportunity to work. There is beautiful nature here – a garden, a forest nearby, and mushrooms and berries growing right under your feet.
I was in a great mood the whole time, created a lot of works and, with Sirpa’s help, held an exhibition that was visited by many people.

Staying at the residency has been an extraordinary experience. The comfortable surroundings provided the perfect environment for me to work, and I obtained the much-needed quietness and solitude to connect with my thoughts and nature. This place was ideal for me, especially coming from a noisy home environment. Here, I found the peace and concentration necessary to focus on my art, thoughts, and future plans.
Finland’s nature is truly extraordinary, with its serene landscapes and tranquil atmosphere. The beauty of the forests, lakes, and the fresh air added a special touch to my creative journey. The people here are incredibly welcoming and kind, making me feel right at home from the moment I arrived.
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity and for providing such a nurturing and inspiring environment.

As we arrived to Heinävaara in mid-May, in the light snow coat of early spring we were welcomed by our generous host Sirpa. During our two weeks at the residency we got to see the spring of Heinävaara – we observed the last snow coat melting into the leaves and flowers blossoming. It was our morning routine to check which flowers have bloomed in the morning sun. In the middle of the poetic landscapes and atmospheres of the residency area and house we worked on moving and voicing into metal music. We dived into euphoria, anger, silly anger, catharsis, and fast, fast rhythms. Sometimes we got stuck on the fastness of the music and inspired by the many visual artists that have passed this villa we turned into painting to calm ourselves down. We also found puzzling and completed the Barcelona puzzle of the house, and had a good attempt on the ‘poika ja varis’ one. As the spring sun and the growing inspiration for our work started to heat our brains, we dipped into the cooling waters of Hietajärvi lake that Sirpa recommended for us. We left the residency with bags full of inspiration towards our new work about dancing into metal music. Our hearts are grateful, rested and happy, eager to hold on to some of the beautiful habits that the calming environment allowed us to discover, little dips in cold water, puzzling and saying hi to flowers in the morning.

Nautin huhtikuussa 2024 muutaman tuottoisan päivän Story Villassa.

I’m so grateful to Sirpa and her son Aapo for their warmth and hospitality during my residency in March 2024. Story Villa is a place where time seemed to stand still for me. A gorgeous and unique space filled with history and character. It was the perfect place to reflect, plan, experiment, and find new focus away from life’s usual distractions. The abundance of space and light, coupled with a sense of cozy homeyness, made the experience truly special. I will always treasure the ways in which this unique environment allowed me to unfold and observe new and different sides to both myself and my ongoing work.

Vietin Story Villassa maaliskuisen viikon kirjoittaen.
Lämmin kiitos Story Villa, kiitos vieraanvarainen Sirpa!
I spent one peaceful week in March in Story Villa, writing. The house and the surrounding nature are most beautiful and inspiring!

Thanks to the owner of the Story Villa Sirpa’s support, I was able to concentrate on creating art and hold an exhibition and a workshop while enjoying snowtime in Heinävaara about for a month between December 2023 and January 2024. She lent me hand-knit socks and gloves, and paid attention to make the rooms warm. Hospitality in winter by Finnish people made my heart warm. She gave a rich dinner on Christmas Eve, and we enjoyed Finnish music together. She took me her cottage and her son Appo taught me lake fishing on another day.
Because the residence was very calm and peaceful, I featured and the story about marine mammals’ vocalizations living in close association with sea ice which I usually didn’t pay attention to. And then I expressed them with ice and snow crystals with origami. I made Ilmatar in the Kalevala appear with the Northern Lights and tried to unite a fairy tale, humanity and ecology. I could create the artwork fitting in the snowy landscape in Heinävaara. In my exhibition and workshop, twenty people visited the studio and enjoyed my artwork even though it was less than -20℃.
I steadily kept making ices with buckets, which I learned in the first day of Heinävaara, every day and made the installation art of ice candles in the greenhouse in the last day of the artist residence. The residence owner couple and I appreciated the installation art while drinking hot wine. The owner couple will make it an annual winter event from now on. I created the installation art of ice candles based on the image of the voices of the marine mammals living in close association with sea ice resonating together, however, I’m happy to imagine the voices of the owner couple and their friends gathering around the installation art of ice candles.

Heinävaara residency. The main outcome of my work was a series of watercolors and a mural at Botania Joensuu. I want to talk about three important features of this place.
Firstly, the villa belonged to an artist. The interior space and the courtyard are infused with a creative atmosphere, making it easy for an artist to find inspiration and a comfortable place to work.
Secondly, the nature of Karelia is powerful, pristine, and peaceful. It provides a lot of energy and strength to feel replenished. I especially recommend visiting during the berry and mushroom seasons to experience the abundance of this land.
And thirdly, the exceptional hospitality of the hosts who made sure that our daily life was easy and uncomplicated, allowing the artist to focus on their project. The hosts also took care to introduce us to the cultural life of the region, showing us galleries, exhibitions, and museums in the vicinity. My colleagues and I felt the warmth of their hospitality and received a lot of assistance in realizing our final exhibition.
I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a productive creative environment and to those seeking a place to rejuvenate their artistic energies. I am infinitely grateful to life for the gift of knowing this place and this wonderful family.

Hi, I’m Masha Litovka, an artist from Kyiv, Ukraine. Residency in Story Villa, Heinävaara was my first and I haven’t dreamt about such a warm welcome, as it was.
I came there at the season of wild strawberries and peonies — my favorites. Before residency I had a huge problem with concentration, war started to overwhelm my mind.
But here, in this peaceful place, I found strength in myself. I read Kalevala — the Finnish-Karelian poetic epic and it gave me a lot of inspiration, as well as nature and all the tiny and not so, artsy and not so, objects at this house.
But the best is my new long-distance friendship with Sirpa and Timo. After knowing them I’ve started to believe in humanity again. I hope it won’t sound too pathetic, because it’s real things that warm my heart.

About Suonetar
Suonetar is a Lady of Veins, a magic healer. She spins veins into her yarns. If someone is wounded or has wounds, she brings with her a bundle of new veins and replaces the broken veins with new ones. Healers can summon her to help close wounds.
The Lemminkäinen’s mother (one of the characters) first asked her for help in reviving her son. With the help of praying to Suonetar and then to other mythical creatures, Lemminkäinen came to life.
I dreamt about asking her to reanimated our heroes from Armed Force of Ukraine and from civilians when I read Kalevala.
So I made series of three images of Suonetar. On an exhibition I added the runa (name of poetic parts in Kalevala) with praying to her.
And other thing is that her images that I found was scary (she’s mostly like a horrific skeleton), but I wanted to show her like not horrific, but like a beautiful part of nature that is about to come alive.

Sirpa Sutinen — the best thing that could have happened during the residency. Because the best thing is always people (yes, the other resident artists are also very good people!) I am grateful to Sirpa for her help and support.
She decorated the house beautifully – very cosy and inspiring, as well as the nature around the house.
During the residency, I was able to feel inner balance, thanks to the opportunity to be free in nature and… sleep well at night. At the same time, realizing that I wanted to return to Ukraine because I missed home, I had to look for things that would help me maintain inner peace and harmony. At a time when you will be nervous about the missiles/events on the front. And I think that the presence of nature, which literally surrounds me from all sides, helped me the most in this. I felt her soul. I want to keep these memories inside me as well as Sirpa’s love and affection for us.

My son and I have lived in Story Villa for a month now, and I am overwhelmed by the feeling of how much this place has given us. Here we could rest, paint, be under the peaceful sky and exhale before moving on. I will miss the tranquility of Story Villa. There, life flows in harmony with nature, hours spent in the workshop, walks in nature, trips to the city, to the museum or to local cultural events to which the hosts always tried to take us. This artist residency in Heinävaara was truly unforgettable, and I sincerely thank Arja for creating it, and Sirpa and her family for developing this extraordinary space.
